COLOGNE, GERMANY–(Marketwire – May 11, 2011) – ITEC 2011 – InterSense Incorporated, a market leader in precision motion technology, today announced it is working with Binghamton Simulator Company and SAIC to supply advanced inertial tracking technology for the U.S. Army’s Non-Rated Crew Member Manned Module (NCM3) system. InterSense’s IS-900 tracker sensors will be seamlessly integrated into the NCM3’s head-mounted displays, simulated weapons and night vision visors to provide highly responsive and accurate personnel and weapons tracking — key elements in delivering a realistic virtual training environment.
NCM3 represents a breakthrough in virtual training — allowing Chinook and Blackhawk helicopter crew members to simultaneously train with pilots in a seamless, virtual environment — a first for the U.S. Army. This new system will be combined with the existing Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) system — which InterSense also supports — to create a full, collective training environment that will improve crew readiness and proficiency prior to operational deployment.
“With today’s modern helicopter fleets, the ability to conduct mission rehearsals for the entire team — pilots and crew — has become essential to achieving real-world success,” said Mike Donfrancesco, vice president of sales and marketing, InterSense Inc. “InterSense is proud to be working with Binghamton and SAIC to deliver the fully integrated training environment the U.S. Army wants and needs. By combining our sensor technology with the NCM3 system technologies, we are creating extraordinarily life-like ‘train as you fight’ scenarios to ensure our military personnel can perform effectively, efficiently and safely in the real world.”
The NCM3 system is designed to help crew members train on critical, coordinated tasks such as gunnery, sling load, and hoist operations while directly leveraging the existing AVCATT program. AVCATT is a mobile, dynamically reconfigurable system used for combined arms tactical training and mission rehearsal. It includes six “man modules” that can be customized to create any configuration of attack, reconnaissance, lift and/or cargo helicopters in the current Army inventory. By employing advanced technology such as InterSense’s IS-900 head motion trackers, AVCATT supports institutional, organizational, and sustainment training for active and reserve Army aviation units worldwide.
The NCM3 is part of a $12M contract awarded by the Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) in February 2010 to Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) and a team that includes Binghamton Simulator Company. A highly flexible system, the NCM3 can be networked with a variety of simulators including the Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT), the Virtual Combat Convoy Trainer (VCCT), the CCTT Reconfigurable Vehicle Simulator (RVS) and the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer (RVTT), each of which is also supported by InterSense sensors. This system commonality provides operating efficiencies that save time and money.
The first NCM3 system will be delivered for military use in May, 2011 with the potential of up to 21 additional NCM3 devices to be procured over the next few years.
